Getting around Zurich

Gettig around Zurich is easy, here's a overview:

Zurich Public Transport

Color coded spider web of Trams, buses, and S-bahn is a case study of efficiency. Running daily from 05:30 to midnight, you rarely wait more than 6 minutes during rush hours, and 8 to 12 minutes off peak. Now how cool is that? Get your ticket at the machines set up on each stop before you get on. The fare is CHF 3.30 for a trip of up to four stops, and CHF 4.10 for longer. Not having a ticket is CHF 47.00. There’s a 1-day pass (Tageskarte) at CHF 7.50, which pays for itself in price and convenience. And get this; that’s a 24 hour card, not calendar day, so you buy it in the evening, it’s good until the next evening. Sweet. And if you have the half-fare card from the SBB (Swiss rail), you get a discount. Last but not least, on weekends there is a night bus that runs through the night.

Zurich By Taxi

Taxis are expensive. The basic charge for just looking at one is CHF 6.00, and CHF 3.50 a kilometer.

Zurich By Car

Not as bad as Paris, but still a pain in the ass. I’m reasonably sure Zurich is intentionally car unfriendly to minimize the traffic, not that it helps. Then there’s the parking, of what precious few spots there are, are expensive. Besides, there’s no need of a car in Zurich (see public transport above).

If you do need to arrive with a car, get the map that has the big blue “P” to indicate the parking. There’s a leaflet available from the Zurich police too. If you’re staying in a hotel, confirm about parking garages. Many, and especially those in the Old Town are not likely to have any.

Zurich By Bike

Biking is good. Very good, and getting better, with more dedicated bike paths, and options, yes options on renting bikes, including free rentals, if that ‘s not an oxymoron. You can rent a city bike at the baggage counter of the railway station, the Hauptbahnhof, for CHF 27.00 per day, and CHF 21.00 for a half day. Open daily from 07:00 to 19:30. As to “free rentals”, from May to October, you can “hire” a robust City Bike free of charge between 07.30 am and 21:30 seven days a week. All you need is a valid form of ID and a CHF 20.00 deposit.

Locations of Zurich Free Bikes are:

Globus City
Oerlikon-Swissôtel
Opernhaus
Bahnhof Enge (from July 2007)
Bikes are available all year round from the Velogate at the main station.

No reservations!

Zurich On Foot

Go ahead, walk it. Lot’s of nice places to walk in Zurich, the quays, Neiderdorf, Bahnhofstrasse and both sides of the Limmat. And plenty of place for a pit stop.
