What’s not to like, scenery, good food, and lots and lots of wine coming from the wine areas on the far side of the Röstigraben , or the west of Switzerland if you prefer. Mostly situated along the lake of Geneva, it’s a breathtaking journey by car, taking the small routes, exploring vineyards and passing through villages like Lavaux, Chebrex, and La Côte.
A secret from the outside world, inside of Switzerland we know that the Swiss produce some fine wine, and the best known, probably because they’re the best wine, comes from the Western part of Switzerland: Fribourg, Geneva, Jura, Neuchâtel, Valais, and Vaud. Fortunately for us, it also produces the most, but don’t worry that quality will suffer, measures are in place to regulate overproduction and improve quality.
Varying microclimates, rainfall decreasing as you move east, lakes to regulate the temperature, changing typography, and diversity of soil assure an array of wine styles. Diversity is key. Check out my posting on the wine region Valais.
Fall is a good time, the weather’s still pleasant, the air is clear, and the light is particularly good for photography. The grape leaves glow orange, yellow and red in the sun, set against a blue background of lake and sky, and in the distance, the white of snow-capped mountains reflect off the lake. We like that, so pop a cork, kick back, and drink it all in.
