What better way to ring in the New Year than a good traditional Pagen festival?
Each year on January 2nd, the Hardermann, his Wyb (woman), and the Potscheten (mountain spirits), parade through Interlaken searching for homes. This involves running through the streets, grabbing spectators and generally spreading "Angst und Schrecken" (fear and horror), ultimately finishing in a guesthouse for a drink. Pre-Christian tradition has much to be said for it.
The costumes tend to be colorful and spirits bear evergreen branches. Like many pagan customs, it was hijacked by the well meaning to achieve other ends.
