I didn’t know there is a respected wood carving school in Brienz. I didn’t know that some years ago, students from the school went up into the mountains and sculpted trees. It’s not in the tourist brochures, but it makes for a good hike through the forest, ultimately coming to a little mountain lake.
You can drive up to Axalp, and hike from there -- don't forget to feed the meter -- or you can drive right up to the beginning of the trail, which of course is marked by a carving of a man pointing to the path.
The weather took an autumn turn. It was cool and quiet, with mist and muted greens all around. The air was filled with a rich, earthy smell, and mushrooms were sprouting everywhere. I spotted some Elves, but can’t confirm.
