Starting over as often in life as I have, you’d think I’d get the hang of it. I’m fairly sanguine at present and see lots of options. Like any big step, you wonder if you’ve made the right decision. All in all, I’d say yes, Switzerland is a better place for me. It was with mixed feelings that I stood in my empty living room in Long Beach last April: relief that the move was over, and a bit glum because some good things ended, which to the to the more philosophical among us is the start of something new.
I'll miss much and many: I hope all the best for those I left behind.
The trip did me well. I was disappointed in some things, like Australia’s East coast, which like a cheap tart has sold her charms to the backpacker for A$2. Other things positively surprised me, like Argentina, with an mixed bag from cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, to wild Terra Del Fuego, with friendly people, good food, good wine and good value. China tempted me with an extended return visit. I would live in New Zealand if you could drag closer.
My next steps are with the Swiss bureaucracies, which so far, have been fairly civilized. After a few set backs in terms of time, I found a temporary place in a 16th century Chalet in Interlaken, then found a nice apartment right “downtown”, with a view of the Jungfrau. I move in mid February. I’ll post pictures in the spring. I’ve started the job “search” and have almost adjusted to the idea of actually finding one.
