Toll booths on the information highway

I'm not sure if this is ironic, stupid or scary, but Senator John McCain - a man that during the presidential campaign un-sheepishly admitted he knows nothing about technology and the internet - is behind a Senate bill that may have serious consequences for net neutrality; the freedom of speech and the democratic nature of the internet*.

Since the day big business woke up and realized that there just might be money in the internet, they have been beside themselves trying to figure out how to squeeze it out. Simply competing wasn't good enough. Periodically one of the telecommunications, wireless or cable companies would do something silly and the FCC would intervene. These companies are trying to get a two tier system, a fast one for the those that can afford it, and another one for everyone else. Like a toll road, access to whats on it will be restricted too.

Now comes the new bill backed by John McCain, the Internet Freedom Act, which would prevent the FCC, or anybody else from making Net Neutrality law. It would make it illegal (ILLEGAL!) to prevent these companies from restricting access.

So, lets get viral on these pricks. Tweet, blog and speak out. If you want to get involved here is a site with some info: Save The Internet

Net Neutrality: Net Neutrality
